In terms of style, the new Mickey Mouse shorts offer a likable combination of the old school from the days of Walt Disney and the modern style of animation, particularly its form from the beginnings of Cartoon Network and the influence of Genndy Tartakovsky. After all, the most prominent person involved in the project, animator Paul Rudish, is a long-time collaborator of Tartakovsky and Lauren Faust. Unfortunately, the blending of old and new influences did not happen at the level of the screenplays, so Mickey Mouse is undone by the desperate conservatism dictated by the icon of the Mouse, which looks very anachronistic despite the cloak of modern animation. It’s surprising how many stereotypes are revived in every episode that seemed to have been eliminated from children’s shows long ago or, said more precisely, that we no longer see in competing productions, but that the conservative Disney studio continues to pound into the heads of the youngest children even in other series.
