Durch den Tod seiner Mutter wird der depressive 28-jährige Ian vollends aus der Spur getragen und beschließt sein Leben auf einer verschneiten Waldlichtung zu beenden. Vom akkurat geplanten Selbstmord hält ihn schließlich nur die Entdeckung eines Mädchenleichnams ab. Ian nimmt sie mit nach Hause und schläft friedlich an ihrer Seite ein. Fortan sucht er die Nähe von Frauen die sterben wollen. Manchmal schließt er mit ihnen einen Pakt, gemeinsam in den Tod zu gehen wobei einiges schief geht und zu absurden Situationen führt. Aber vielleicht sucht eine Seite in ihm auch nur das Leben und die Liebe. In der Zwischenzeit müssen aber für Ians tote Lebensabschnittsbegleiterinnen erst einmal Gräber im Garten geschaufelt werden. I didn’t find it endlessly depressing or incredibly sad. Ian simply wasn’t lucky to get the life he wanted and the understanding of other people. Which I understand. I also had some understanding for him for a while. But after that while, however, I tried to get closer to him because I found out he’s not such a bad person. But that changes nothing about the fact that he has been through some hardships that the others would barely be able to handle… and if so, then probably only with some lasting consequences. Love Eternal is based on a pretty strange, borderline bleak idea. You could spend hours thinking about it and contemplating the topic of death. So, I guess it’s not for everybody. But there’s no denying the movie has some filmmaking qualities and it’s great that this premise was handled by Irish cinematographers as the story is a great fit for Ireland. All in all, Ireland once again confirmed to me that they barely have a match in Europe.
