Two friends discover the perfect beach at a remote Norwegian shore just above the Arctic Circle and decide to spend the winter here – surfing. Building a hut from driftwood and living on expired food only, the young men turn sustainable living into their own Robinson-adventure, keeping their calm even in the face of personal danger. The seemingly harsh environment rewards them with powerful, green waves frothed white, flanked by snow-covered cliffs. And we see the surfers – covered in neoprene suits – waving happily to the camera sitting on their boards or effortlessly riding a wave's crest. Shot both on ground level and down from an air-glider, this film equally reflects the solemn beauty and the exciting ferocity of possibly the most beautiful surfing spot outside of Hawai'i.

This documentary is a complete balm to the soul. It’s not lengthy, but at the same time, it’s not so short when I realize how many ideas it encompasses, which is a lot considering that these boys had more left to say. In any case, hats off for such a project. There might be about three more tons of premium waste in that bay now, but I can’t rate it any lower than five stars because of the awareness and the desire to make a change. By the way, those shots with the guys surfing in wetsuits were flawless. That’s what I call freedom! ()
