Der Journalist Raoul Duke soll über ein Autorennen in Nevada berichten. In einem roten Cabrio rast er, begleitet von seinem Kumpel Dr.Gonzo, nach Las Vegas. Es soll eine Reise ins Herz Amerikas werden, das durch Vietnamkrieg und etliche Skandale erschüttert ist. Ausgestattet mit Drogen jeglicher Art, wird ihre Reise zum Trip in den amerikanischen "Albtraum".
