Hell on Wheels

After all five seasons, I can say that I was very satisfied. I am always pleased when someone can handle a western well. I was thrilled that the creators chose a Confederate Army veteran as the protagonist. Unlike other people, I don't think the American Civil War broke out in order to put an end to slavery (the difference between a cause and a pretext is often significant). I enjoyed how the motif of revenge gradually transformed into an obsession with the railway. I enjoyed the gradual development of individual characters, and I think that Colm Meaney was a great choice for the character of Thomas Durant. Great satisfaction on my part. 4*+ (06.12.2018)

The whole season had great period atmosphere from start to finish, a lot of realistic shots (I must say again how glad I am that the screen doesn’t transmit odors), an interesting cast, well-written characters and a successful plot (the railway construction went well together with revenge). The season had some downright perfect episodes, as well as slightly weaker ones, but none of them bad, the difference was mostly in the amount of action. (24.11.2018)

The series was recommended to me, I didn't know anything about it except that it was about a western, and because I definitely don't mind a good western, I went for it. The pilot episode immediately caught my attention, it was packed with events, had an excellent period atmosphere, and I could even cheer for the Chechen Dog Soldiers, so I had a great time. The second episode was still slightly weaker compared to the pilot. The most interesting character spent most of the time captive, so I was glad that the creators introduced me to the great romantic, extremely empathetic head of Durant's security, Thor Gundersen, who, despite being Norwegian, is called the Swede. The third episode was livelier again, it entertained me from the beginning to the end and I didn't find any dull moments. The creators brought action back into the game, which, in combination with the great atmosphere and pleasant pace of the story, worked excellently, so I had no reason to lower the rating. And again, an episode came that I could not repeat because it did not have the same pace as the previous and pilot episodes. If this pattern continues, odd episodes should be better than even ones. Anyway, it is true that even the "weaker" parts are very good, and I enjoy them very much. I hope it lasts for me. (22.11.2018)

Hmmm, so the theory of odd and even episodes took a sharp turn because the action was minimized this time (excluding the boxing match, which I really don't count). So, what amused me the most was the "security chief" and his intervention against defaulters. The annoying talk about the terrible fate of black men under the whip of slaveholders almost ruined the episode for me. Thank goodness they don't have Jews there, or they would surely cry over the dreadful future awaiting them, with the Holocaust. (23.11.2018)

I had a great time again in the sixth episode. It wasn't a part that was full of action, but what I really enjoyed this time were the conversations. Especially the negotiations between Čejen and the senator were perfect, but I was also thrilled by the explanation of immaculate conception, and the five bites were decided upon. (23.11.2018)

Wow, wow, this was definitely a full-fat episode. In this case, I enjoyed the quality action (finally) and similarly good interviews. The creators really went all out this time, it was truly entertaining during the action scenes and having Lily in the Bellová house and Durant with Crane was an added bonus. (23.11.2018)

Even though the creators saved up on actions this time, I had no reason to save up on stars. It's a shame that Cullen didn't have a star on his uniform, that would be major! Yes, after years, a person only remembers the fun things from the war:-) The progress of the criminal expedition and Lily's getting used to camp life were definitely amusing to me. (23.11.2018)

I was very satisfied again, even though the fight with the Chechens logically could not end well. At least for the side I was rooting for. Once again, I liked the period atmosphere, well-executed action, interesting development of side storylines, and the evolution of individual characters. In the ninth episode, I was particularly intrigued by the pastor and the McGinnis brothers' transition to pornography. (24.11.2018)

It wasn't bad, but I did expect more from the final part of a very successful first season. Cullen's story of family loss is important for the story, but that doesn't mean I needed to hear it five times and see it again. My memory serves me well. Additionally, the tenth episode noticeably lacked proper action, so I couldn't give it five stars. (24.11.2018)

Season 2 gets five stars from me, too, although I consider its plot to be slightly weaker than the first season. What needs no criticism is the atmosphere that works perfectly from the pilot episode to the closing credits of the season finale. Some episodes could have done with a bigger dose of action or intrigue for my complete satisfaction, but despite these minor issues, I have been greatly entertained so far. The first episode of the second season was not the best of what I have seen in the series so far. The storyline with the outlaws didn't really capture my attention, the storyline in Hell on Wheels seemed definitely more interesting to me. The whole thing wasn't bad, but I had the feeling that the plot was missing something. (24.11.2018)

Neither the second episode convinced me too much, and the second season seems weaker to me than the previous one so far. The creators still manage to create a great atmosphere, but the plot and action in the events of the first season are not enough. Not yet. I firmly believe that there will be a change for the better quickly, Cullen's return to the settlement would suggest that. (24.11.2018)

Well, the plot of the third episode returned to the mobile settlement and interesting things suddenly started happening. It's true that the creators didn't come up with any wild action this time, but it didn't matter at all because the manipulator Gundersen and the traditional Irish-German relations took care of the entertainment for me. After the previous excitement, the series returned to its average with this episode. However, I must admit that in the case of this series, even the average episodes are actually above average. That's why I'm even more sorry that the creators didn't improve the story in any way, so I could be completely satisfied. The introduction of the episode promised a wilder development. (25.11.2018)

After a very short break, the creators came up with another very high-quality episode. This time, a successful action was added to the traditionally great atmosphere, which I have been waiting for since the beginning of the season. There was also a decent amount of intrigue and manipulation, and I can say for myself that it was the best episode of the second season so far. (25.11.2018)

I could hardly expect that the sixth episode would be as action-packed as the previous one, but I still did not experience any disappointment. The creators did not hesitate when creating the atmosphere this time either, and the events around Durant's departure to Chicago did not lack a decent dose of tension, and I really enjoyed the whole thing. The story has calmed down again, small domestic problems were being solved, but the missing action was not replaced by any full-fledged intrigues this time, so I had to give it a star lower. However, I don't want to give the impression that it was a boring episode, I just know that the creators of the series can do better. (26.11.2018)
