Community (2009)

Englisch I saw the show's first three seasons at one time and I remember that I really liked it, but when I returned to it after years (and caught up with three missing seasons), the excitement wasn't there. It is true that Community contains episodes that almost made me burst with laughter and that I would gladly watch again, but there were far fewer of those episodes than I had hoped for. The writing took a nosedive, which I came to terms with, so I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the fifth season. However, it turned out that it was only the dying sparks. I couldn't believe the development... no, the degeneration the character of Britta Perry went through. Should I take it as a warning against using marijuana? On the other hand, Annie Edison was excellent. In my eyes, the show suffered greatly from (increasingly frequent in later seasons) recycled ideas and the associated loss of originality. / Lesson learned: Cabin fever can be prevented by changing the crew. ()

Season 1 (2009) (S01)

Englisch The first season had some serious ups and downs. The episodes were all over the place in terms of quality. Thankfully, none of them hit straight-up garbage. For me, the real deal-breaker was how they handled humor. I was disappointed all too often. / Lesson learned: When it comes to comedy, skip the moral lectures, just give me the laughs. ()

Zurück aufs College! (2009) (S01E01)

Englisch Gotta admit I was way more into the pilot episode back in the day. Today, it didn't leave as great an impression, mainly because the humor wasn't hitting it out of the park. It feels like a slow start, introducing the characters and the setting. / Lesson learned: Don't push it. ()

Grundkurs Spanisch (2009) (S01E02)

Englisch The second episode seemed like it would be better than the last one, but then Señor Chang's monologue hit and annoyed the hell out of me. The humor feels a bit retarded (sorry, Abed), so I'm not having a blast just yet, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it picks up. / Lesson learned: Don't try to be empathetic just to impress others. It'll blow back on you. ()

Carpe Diem (2009) (S01E03)

Englisch Finally, an episode that kept me hooked! It had me entertained right from the start, even before the opening credits. It kept up the vibe throughout, and for once, I didn't keep checking how much time was left till the end. The sneezing course had me cracking up, and if it weren't for the dramatic, moral lesson moment, I'd probably be slapping a four-star rating on it. / Lesson learned: Seize the day! ()

Bitte warten (2009) (S01E04)

Englisch I had a blast with this episode. Every character brought their A-game, and surprisingly, I even enjoyed the gossip subplot. But the absolute standout this time was Professor Duncan's sadistic experiment. It was both informative and entertaining, and I didn't even need to take notes. / Lesson learned: No real experiment with volunteers can do without an anal probe. ()

Prozess im Schwimmbad (2009) (S01E05)

Englisch Most people seemed to like it, so maybe it's just me, but this episode fell flat for my taste. The creators didn't make the most of the entire main cast, the humor didn't quite match the level of the previous one, and truth be told, the only scene that got a chuckle out of me was when Abed and Troy were goofing around. Not enough to fill up a twenty-minute slot. / Lesson learned: Even though basic military service isn't a thing anymore, some of the lessons I picked up still hold true today. Never volunteer. That's one of them. ()

Toiletten-Talk (2009) (S01E06)

Englisch This time around, the plot wasn't as painfully vacant as the last one, but it didn't exactly set off fireworks either. The sixth episode had its moments, especially with the blackmailing that Moby pulled off, and even the mascot creation wasn't a total bust – Moby nailed it there too. But that's about it; the rest of the episode didn't quite hit the mark for me (just not funny enough). / Lesson learned: Don't let yourself be manipulated by blackmailers. ()

Mexikanisches Halloween (2009) (S01E07)

Englisch This episode kicked things up a notch compared to the last two. The seventh episode had its moments, like the attempt to seduce the professor, but it didn't exactly blow me away. The real magic went down at the Mexican Day of the Dead party. I was digging it, especially Pierce's Beastmaster, but Abed's Batman stole the spotlight. / Lesson learned: Stay true to yourself even while wearing a mask. ()

Picknick unter Sternen (2009) (S01E08)

Englisch Another swift nosedive after I praised the last episode. The only real upside to this episode was that the plot wasn't downright terrible. But, that's pretty much it. Can't say I had a good time with it. The creators dabbled in a bunch of storylines, but none of them hit the humor level I was expecting, so it ended up being pretty dull. / Lesson learned: Assist the homeless only when you're mentally prepared for it. ()

Der Mensch ist gut (2009) (S01E09)

Englisch The last episode was a total flop – a snooze-fest with a plot that failed to grab my attention. Right after that disappointment, the ninth episode rolled in, and, aside from a few minor hiccups, I was all in. It's not rocket science – a comedy series should pack in the laughs. Anytime the creators deliver on that front, I'm on board, and in this case, the debate, hypnosis, and Abed's movies worked for me. / Lesson learned: Don't let others foretell your future, or you'll miss out on the thrill of the unexpected. ()

Green Day für Arme (2009) (S01E10)

Englisch The last episode was definitely better, but hey, the tenth one didn't crash and burn. For the first time, Seňor Chang didn't get on my nerves like crazy. I could've used a bigger dose of humor and a smaller dose of singing, but I was pleasantly surprised by how Pierce and his motivational coaching got to me this time. / Lesson: Always pick your chair wisely. ()

Das P-Wort (2009) (S01E11)

Englisch By the standard rating, this episode might be a solid three stars, but Abed's announcement on the intercom just nailed the whole thing so perfectly that I couldn't help but throw in that extra star. The eleventh episode wasn't exactly mind-blowing, but it kept me entertained pretty darn well. / Lesson learned: The higher your expectations or curiosity, the bigger the chance for disappointment. ()

Die Weihnachtsschlacht (2009) (S01E12)

Englisch This episode was close to getting a higher rating, but it needed some tweaking. It's a bummer the creators couldn't resist the unnecessary and nonsensical fight scene. If they stuck to exploring Christmas celebrations from seven different angles, it could've been genuinely interesting and entertaining. Unfortunately, they watered it down. / Lesson learned: If those pagan folks won't ditch their traditions, just incorporate them into your religion. Problem solved. ()

Zweite Wahl (2010) (S01E13)

Englisch So, I had to knock the rating down a few notches. The thirteenth episode brought in Jack Black. And because I've had this weird, unwarranted dislike for him since day one, it ruined the whole vibe of the episode for me. But to be fair, it wasn't all on Jack Black; other than some cool MASH references, the episode didn't do much for me. / Lesson learned: A confused, hyperactive person can turn a good thing into a total mess. ()

Echte Männer tanzen nicht (2010) (S01E14)

Englisch I appreciate the absence of Jack Black in contrast to the previous episode, but overall, it didn't grab me as I hoped. The creators leaned heavy into relationship drama, while the humor was apparently supposed to be provided by Moby, but it kinda fell flat. Once again, the real fun came through with Troy and Abed's episode tag. / Lesson learned: You can't hide from Twitter ()

Jeder mit jedem (2010) (S01E15)

Englisch Okay, so it wasn't the greatest episode, but hey, it was noticeably better than the last couple. Unfortunately, they decided to keep the Vaughn storyline going in the fifteenth episode, and I was never into philosophical debates over vegetables. On a brighter note, Kickpuncher looked like an awesome C or maybe even a D-grade movie that I'd totally be down to watch. I mean, if I made it through Sharknado... / Lesson learned: Don't be pushy. ()

Trunken am Telefon (2010) (S01E16)

Englisch What a letdown. I've mentioned before how I set the bar high for holiday episodes of sitcoms, and this one just didn't hit the mark. The Valentine's Day plot was kinda weak – there was so much potential for humor, but instead, it turned into this weird relationship mess and a downright bizarre travesty show. / Lesson learned: If you're planning to get wasted, maybe leave your phone at home. ()

Billard ohne (2010) (S01E17)

Englisch So, post-Valentine's letdown, this was a bit of a pick-me-up. It didn't exactly hit the series' all-time highs for me. But, if I said I wasn't enjoying myself I'd be straight-up lying. I got a good laugh out of that pool showdown with the requisite cues and balls, and Abed's take on relationships had me chuckling too. / Lesson learned: Put your heart into it! ()

Familientag (2010) (S01E18)

Englisch This episode felt quite similar to the previous one. I just wasn't thrilled. It seems the creators are quite stingy with humor. Yet, it wasn't a total disaster because I found myself genuinely enjoying it on more than one occasion. It would be a welcome change if the scriptwriter decided to ditch occasional moralizing and fully embraced the humor. / Lesson learned: Think very, very carefully before pressing G13. ()
