Mexiko, Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts. In der Kneipe eines heruntergekommenen Fischerdorfes heuert die junge Leah die vier Abenteurer Hooker, Fiske, Daly und Vincente an, um ihren Mann zu bergen, der in einer Goldmine verschüttet liegt. Der Weg zur Mine führt weit ins Landesinnere, durch unwegsames, den Indianern heiliges Gebiet. Einzig Leah kennt den Weg. Sie glaubt, dass ihre Begleiter nur des Goldes wegen mitgekommen sind. Um sie in Abhängigkeit zu halten, entfernt sie heimlich alle ihre Wegmarkierungen. In der Goldmine gelingt es ihnen, Leahs Mann aus dem eingestürzten Schacht zu bergen. Gemeinsam mit dem Schwerverletzten treten sie den Rückweg an, der zum tödlichen Abenteuer wird. (3sat)

You can definitely tell this film is from 1954. It has that classic intro and ending you’d recognize if you’ve ever watched an old-school Hollywood movie—the kind Tarantino’s characters might watch, with a nod to the golden age of cinema. And then there’s that shot focusing on the closing credits with the Cinemascope logo, giving it that nostalgic touch. It’s all pretty straightforward, but the outdoor scenes are stunning, and the colorization is beautifully done. However, the story itself is a bit of a snooze, and the acting doesn’t do much to elevate it.
