The subject-matter of this comedy is age-old: that of the schizophrenic soul. Papa would have liked boy twins years ago, but her wife gave birth to a single child weighing six kilograms. He would like to dampen his feeling of emptiness by having the boy registered both as Péter and Pál. Péter-Pál leads a double life in the same village: at one place he is a painter married to a lean, blonde wife, at the other he is a mason with a typically local wife with brown hair. Péter is helpful and polite, Pál is clumsy and a drunkard. Although the two figures help each other, in the end their lives become hopelessly entangled and Pál drowns Péter. Yet his lost life, the beautiful blonde widow and his orphaned children pull him back. (Verleiher-Text)
