Maria tells the story of a young woman from Eastern Germany, who, after being forced to flee from the Red Army to a refugee-camp in Lubeck, is invited to move to Iceland to work on an isolated farm. After travelling on a trawler across the Atlantic Ocean, Maria goes to live with a middle-aged brother and sister, where the nature is spectacular, but life very primitive. The farmer falls in love with Maria, but when he gets too close she is forced to run away again, this time to Reykjavik, where a jew named Bruno offers her a job at the city's hottest night club.
