What makes the German people tick? What gets on their nerves? Do East German jelly bananas still taste differently to those in the West? On the eve of the last German elections in 2005 Hans-Erich Viet sets out from his home in East Frisia on a journey into the heart of the German psyche. His trip takes in pubs, workshops, businesses and homes. He goes to a Canadian radio station that broadcasts folk music to German expats and visits a shooting club. He speaks to butchers, pop singers, factory workers, and soldiers. An old woman talks about her memories of the war and a Taiwanese restaurant owner in Berlin reveals his techniques for cooking sea bass. Claus Graf von Stauffenberg’s cousin offers personal insights into a famous relative. This is a multifaceted picture of German culture, identity and everyday life, which is full of idiosyncrasies and interesting characters. The director goes beyond depressing newspaper headlines and offers a laconic and entertaining assessment of the true state of a nation. (DOK.fest München)
