Companies like Uber, Amazon and Deliveroo depend on human workers to make their apps work. Despite the promise of flexible hours and independence, many workers are waking up to the consequences of lacking workers’ rights and letting apps and customer ratings control their lives. The Gig Is Up depicts the gig economy from workers’ perspectives, following an Uber driver in California, a Deliveroo cyclist in France, as well as internet workers in Florida and Nigeria called ‘mechanical turks’, who do the work artificial intelligence can’t.
