Birds Of Prey: The Emancipation Of Harley Quinn (2020)

Englisch Ignore it. Birds of Prey wants to be an edgy, perhaps even controversial film full of gritty and dark humour, bold directorial choices, strong characters and uncompromising atmosphere. But for that to work, the film would have to be made by someone more skilled than Cathy Yan, who gives it a pretty interesting visual look, but has absolutely no idea how to work with the characters and how to build relationships between them. And given that this is pretty much what Birds of Prey is supposed to be about, it's quite a problem. But she may also be a problem in that when Harley goes solo, she turns out not to be a very interesting character. This team-up wants to be something like Deadpool, but the the tough girls of Gotham can’t even hold a candle to the verbose mercenary. They're still good in the action scenes, but once they start talking and building relationships, it becomes apparent how boring these heroines are and how all that toughness and grit only works on paper. Behind the R-rating and the wild colours, there is a film can’t hide the fact that it has no ideas and is boring most of the time.

Rambo: Last Blood (2019)

Englisch The trailers didn't promise a fundamentally accomplished film, but I still believed I would get one in the cinema. Well, I didn't. The Fifth Rambo is not very good , but not because of the craftsmanship, lack of action or cheapness. Rather, it's because it's not really Rambo. It's more like Emo-Rambo. Sylvester Stallone spends an hour and a quarter trying to look like a man struggling with his inner demons and a past of violence, but appreciating that something good has finally come into his life. And it takes him a hell of a long time to turn into the Rambo we know and love (or at least I do). We don't really see any action until the last half hour and it's extremely brutal and for a while I felt like I was watching a crossover of Saw and Friday the 13th rather than Rambo, but I didn't mind. What bothered me was the hour and a quarter before that, in which they completely nonsensically devote space to new characters and try to explore the inner workings of a cinematic warrior. Regardless of the fact that there's not really much there, and we already saw the little there is in the fourth outing. If it weren't called Rambo, I'd probably be more forgiving of this whiny B movie and the wait for the finale. But as a conclusion to a classic action franchise, it's unnecessary at best. And quite sad at times.

Playmobil - Der Film (2019)

Englisch A brother and sister find themselves in a world of strange and not so nice little men and when the brother gets lost, the sister has to find him and a great adventure begins. In theory. Playmobil: The Movie is a very sedentary animated film that relies heavily on showing as many kits as possible, and because of that, you stop noticing how mediocre it is in every way at best. It’s alright for the kids, without them, there's no reason to see it.

ES: Kapitel 2 (2019)

Englisch If it wasn't almost three hours long, it would be stupid and boring. As it is, it's a stupid, boring and long.

Anna - Die Agentin (2019)

Englisch An action B-movie about a KGB assassin who must unleash a secret service war to win her freedom. And the whole thing is unfortunately mediocre fun at best. Two good action scenes and a seductive Sasha Luss in the lead role can't hide the fact that it's all surprisingly stupid and ultimately not very entertaining.

Men In Black: International (2019)

Englisch Young agent M and British veteran H must join forces to stop a threat that wants to destroy the entire planet. And so they travel between London, New York, Africa and Paris. And it’s boring. The new Men in Black lacks wit, ideas, a clever story and interesting protagonists. And they have nothing to offer either fans of the franchise or casual fans of great sci-fi comedies. A useless film.

Godzilla 2 - King Of The Monsters (2019)

Englisch Wow, I didn't enjoy it. Like, so very, very, very much. The other Godzilla shows that it cost a lot of money, and the monster battles are actually pretty good, at least the final one, which cleverly works with scale and alternates spectacular shots of two dueling titans with action with human characters running at their feet. But that's pretty much it. The new Godzilla has about fifteen human characters, but finding a single one among them that was the least bit interesting or likeable was a task beyond me. A few hours after the screening, I actually remember the names of about two of the protagonists. The trouble is that despite all the declamation and certain attempts to conceive Godzilla II a little differently, it is ultimately very much about those human characters, who of course are the ones who, by their dullness, flatness and absolute unwillingness to take themselves even a little bit less seriously (this is a film in which a giant lizard fights an even bigger three-headed dragon, dammit!) they get boring at first, and then just annoying. The grandeur and elegance promised by the trailers isn't there in the end, and while the fights are fun to watch, the rest of it really doesn't work. In fact, as a viewer, I'm not really interested in seeing another film conceived in this way.

Pokémon Meisterdetektiv Pikachu (2019)

Englisch Tim arrives in a town where humans and Pokémon live side by side. He wants to find out what happened to his father, and he gets an unexpected partner, Pikachu, who can talk. Only Tim can understand him, but that's useful. Pokémon: Detective Pikachu is grand family entertainment, full of Pokémon, but their cuteness can't hide the fact that the film has a rather hackneyed story and not very interesting human characters. Fans of Pokémon will be happy, because there are a lot of them running around on the screen. The rest, however, will be treated to mediocre entertainment at best, with a fine Ryan Reynolds.

Happy Deathday 2U (2019)

Englisch Tree is in a time loop again and someone is after her. When she dies, she wakes up again and gets a second chance, but this time it's more complicated, because she's in a world where the rules are a little different. Happy Death Day 2U deserves praise for not just being a classic sequel, but for trying to inject more sci-fi or dramatic elements into the story. Sadly, the problem is the execution. Christopher Landon may have had enough ideas, but as a director he doesn't have the chops to mix them into an entertaining film.

Im Netz der Versuchung (2019)

Englisch When Matthew McConaughey's ex-wife Anne Hathaway arrives on a small tropical island and wants him to kill her new husband, crazy things start happening. Probably a lot crazier than you'd expect, but unfortunately not very entertaining. Serenity is a combination of film-noir and femme fatale with Alex Proyas's Dark City, The Matrix, Lost, Inception, Total Recall and a documentary about fishing. If you are into that, feel free to give the cinema a try. Otherwise, I'd recommend watching any of the listed above. Even if it's your tenth time, you'll probably have a lot more fun.
