Les Chevaliers blancs (2015)

Englisch After watching the movie, I was a bit sorry that the French tended to describe quite an interesting premise, but they approached it in such a way that would put to sleep even a mermaid in the ocean. The thing is the topic is pretty interesting for somebody who isn’t involved in this and it seems to be telling the story of people who have a tendency to help in Africa and who have quite good plans for the world around them. However, while watching the film, you get to know absolutely nothing. You will rather have the feeling that the group of people are simply watching and observing what’s going on around them, which is definitely not too far from the truth. But evidently they actually helped out over there. But how? A movie without an opinion, without answers, without a spirit and without life…

Eternité (2016)

Englisch A stupidly made movie, whose premise at first sight seems terribly epic, but in reality its endlessness in the form of long-playing nonsensicaly illogical melodies on the piano will give you nothing more that an eclipse of your brain’s left hemisphere. Eternity is a terribly boring movie and watching it is an unspeakable torture.

Pusher II: Respect (2004)

Englisch It’s been a really long time since I saw the first part of The Pusher, so I said to myself it would be a good idea to watch the remaining parts so that the entire trilogy could gradually conclude. Well and the second part focuses on a pretty stupid character, who is portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen. And since we all already know that Mads is a great actor, you can bet that he sure had a lot fun with this one. The entire movie is built on him and thanks to him it is genius. No more words are necessary. Simply watch it and see for yourselves. It’s been a long time since I saw a movie that would stand or fall with a single character like it does in this case.

The Angriest Man In Brooklyn (2014)

Englisch Could this be the last film in which Robin Williams made an appearance? I don’t know, I don’t have such a detailed knowledge of his acting portfolio. But it will definitely have been one of his last movies and I felt that you could clearly see it in the way he acts. His character was sort of worn down with life and sad, and of course he was hot-tempered as well. There was sadness in his eyes, but also a great acting skill. I have seen that with a few actors who rose to fame for their work in comedies and then they amazed everybody with a portrayal of a serious role. I had a similar feeling while watching this film and even though some scenes in connection with the music came across like something from a B movie, I have to say that as a whole, Robin, Mila and Peter seemed so incredibly human, honest and down-to-earth that it would be a pity to relegate this movie to an average status. At least Robin would definitely deserve that.

Big Little Lies (2017) (Serie)

Englisch I really wouldn’t want to live in a town like that. Even though it’s some community in California, at times I felt as if the story was taking place somewhere in Scandinavia. The mix of people in this story showed some crazy relationship tangles and during seven episodes told me a story that in an interesting way leads to murder. It doesn’t start with murder, but it ends with it. The problem with the show, however, was that it was taking a long time until it finally began, and I really spent about half of the show getting used to the characters, not saying that I got used to them at all. Nevertheless, Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley showed performances that are truly out of this world, and the male part of the crew was pretty close behind. It is also nice that this story is about lying women and not men, so some feminists are gonna weep. It is interesting to see how far these mothers can go for the fundamentals of motherhood and preserving a family. There’s definitely something to it, but you won’t realize the true quality of the whole premise until the very end, so don’t hesitate and try to stick with the seven episodes as much as you can. It will be worth it.

Coriolanus (2011)

Englisch I thought I can make it through this Shakespearean play remade into the present. I hoped that the action scenes would be so interesting and brutal that they would keep me in suspense until the end. But in the end, I found out that this film is very difficult to process, and at the same time I had a hard time trying to keep my brain from jumping out of my head, because all the action scenes were shot in such a way that you don’t get to see a single explosion. I appreciate the attempt to shoot something differently. I still didn’t find the meaning of this film, but it was an attempt. And that counts.

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

Englisch The last instalment, which was about alternative pasts, realities, futures and future pasts including the past future, annoyed me so much that I didn’t even feel like watching the next instalment called Apocalypse. I was discouraged by the fact that the whole universe around the X-Men is awfully asymmetrical and has no logic in it. In addition, the two-and-a-half-hour footage is also not easy to swallow. Especially since when hearing the word X-Men, I currently think of a number of swear words. Nevertheless, I gave Apocalypse a chance and I must admit that I was very pleasantly surprised. While the director does not bother with the logic of the story and feeds the audience with one nonsense after another, it does no harm to the relatively simple premise, and at least it allows the individual characters to develop, which is nice. There is a significant number of them. I consider the scene where Quicksilver saves the whole academy in slow motion to be the highlight of the movie. It was truly flawless, and it was then that I realize that this instalment is not actually bad at all. Until then, I was quite undecided, because this film definitely doesn’t interest you with the story. And that’s the whole point. In the end, I realized that I was not into the story at all, but rather into the individual characters, which really surprised me and pleased me at the same time. Finally something from the comic book world that I care about. Let’s just hope that they won’t disappoint the next time, as my feelings after X-Men: First Class were pretty similar…

Wo die wilden Menschen jagen (2016)

Englisch With his last vampire parody Taika Waititi made me laugh like nobody else has in a long time. So I assumed the Hunt for the Wilderpeople would be in a similar vein, but I was mistaken. It sure is a funny movie. Only the good premise and a limited number of jokes were pushed aside by the New Zealand landscape, which is the main and most important character of the whole movie. Sure, the little fat kid who presents the Maori nation, suppressed by the current commercial world ruled in his case by the black gang of rappers led by Jay-Z, has enough to do with it. I simply couldn’t shake the impression that his character was sometimes a little over the edge compared to what I lived in. After the film, I almost felt like I was ceasing to understand today’s young people, even though I was one of them until recently. However, Taika Waititi directed it well, so he cleverly pitted today’s modern world against the very nature from which the Maori came, and even though the conclusion was quite brutally overdone, the film still managed to entertain me for almost two hours.

Bleeder (1999)

Englisch I originally thought this would be some kind of a side project within the Dealer trilogy. Once I started watching, I quickly realized that it’s not that simple. Nevertheless, this film has one thing in common with that trilogy, the very atmosphere of the Danish underworld. However, that is strongly regulated by Mads Mikkelsen, who already back then proved what a great actor he is, and he was towering over the rest of the Danish cast. His character of a movie mad guy running a video rental store strongly reminded me of Quentin Tarantino’s early life, and it made me laugh a lot. But that was the only thing that was worth the interest in this film. Mads was really superior in quality so that he pushed everyone else to the bottom of the filmmaking craft. If the flick was solely about him, it would be without hesitation a five-star movie.

The Phenom (2016)

Englisch Ethan Hawke is such a great actor and yet he pushes his way into every stupid movie. The Phenom is a film that completely lacks meaning for the Czech audience, but if you like Ethan, you will admit that the film not only stands on him, but without him, for the lack of understanding the environment, you would send it to the filmmaking hell, at least.
