Jennifer's Body - Jungs nach ihrem Geschmack (2009)

Englisch He, he! This is no silly wannabe horror for teenagers, but a very well made and sharp satirical comedy that requires an audience with a sense for insight. With Megan Fox I wasn’t sure until the end whether she acts like that because she doesn’t know any better, or because that’s what they wanted from her. Either way, I got used to it after a few minutes and it no longer irritated me. We could argue about the story and the way it develops, but I will refrain from it this time because I don’t think it’s important – what matters here are the dialogues and the one-liners. If you want to enjoy Jennifer’s Body, you will enjoy it. 7/10

House of the Devil (2009)

Englisch This is the kind of stuff I can really love every now and again! A fantastic recreation of the atmospheric occult horror movies from the turn of the 1970s and 80s; from the music, through the credits, to certain nice screenplay tropes (What does the heroine do in a key moment? Yes,… – I don’t want to spoil it). If you’re used to modern horror with a cheap jump-scare every five minutes to keep your attention, this film will be hell, in the good and bad sense of the word – it depends on how you take it. The atmosphere is built with long shots of the heroine slowly walking through an empty cottage, with nothing but oppressive music and a weird noise here and there – and no jump-scares. Some people will fall asleep with this (most viewers, I think), but others will feel as tense as a violin string. Given the rating, which group I belong to is obvious. The more viewer friendly and action packed last fifteen minutes are fairly over the top in a nice way, but they don’t surpass the atmospheric inferno of the second act.

Spurlos verschwunden (1988)

Englisch An interesting and very “European” dramatic thriller. The only serious issue I had with it were the bland actors and their roles. The characters felt weirdly written, which is something very usual in old dark European films – you never come across a normal person. The director plays quite a lot with the atmosphere (very good at times, then something happens and it’s gone), and instead of focusing on the pace, he creates characters with dubious psychology. I can’t say that it fully worked on me. 7/10

Die Wölfin (1982)

Englisch I looked forward so much to The Wolf, and now that I’ve finally watched it, I am very happy that I will never have to watch it again. Yes, it’s boring. 5/10

Der Bär (1988)

Englisch Hmm, very nice, but I certainly can’t say it captivated me or, God forbid, that I will need to watch it again.

The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007)

Englisch For some mysterious reason, I missed The Poughkeepsie Tapes when it came out, and my TOP also said quite clearly that it wasn’t too good, so I didn’t even feel like going after it. It was a mistake! It turned out to be an interesting film experience and, even though I had mixed feelings at the beginning (too much blabber), in the end I’m satisfied. The hand-held footage is a lot more “low quality” than in REC, for instance, but also more realistic and intense. If I were to believe this is an actual documentary with real footage (especially the last interview), I would be very depressed.

For Sale by Owner (2009)

Englisch I sometimes admire the patience I have with below-par, uninteresting films like this one. For Sale by Owner is a great example of boring horror about a house where something is not right. If you’ve already watched at least one of the million other better takes on this premise, don’t waste your time.

Moon - Die dunkle Seite des Mondes (2009)

Englisch Great sci-fi film. At the beginning I was afraid that what is immediately clear to smart viewers would turn out to be the shocking twist, but fortunately, the creators weren’t so naive. Moon delivers a very intelligent story, eye-candy visuals, excellent music (and catchy, I still can’t get that melody out of my head), and also emotionally strong scenes. All that together results in a unique movie that no fan of science fiction, or cinema in general, should miss. Basically flawless 5*.

Basement Jack (2009)

Englisch A similar case as this year's Laid to Rest, which means that whenever the killer (who here looks like a shabby Jesus Christ) shows up, the quality improves sharply and his rampages are a joy to watch. Unfortunately, the filler around it is ruined by bad actors. It could have been much better. 5/10

Meat Grinder (2009)

Englisch Due to boredom, I wasn’t able to finish Meat Grinder. The gore is excellent, but I didn’t like the film at all…
