Alita: Battle Angel (2019)

Englisch Alita is a pretty good movie. Nice effects, nicely shot, great action. Alita isn't a whiny girl and to some extent the heroes are appealing. The Dolby Atmos worked well for it. It was just a little too shallow for my taste; it basically didn't give you the space to like anyone. Those who know the source material might like it. If they can get over the inevitable loss of information. A better 3 stars.

Tonari no Kaibucu-kun (2018)

Englisch The film unfortunately jumps weirdly from one to the next, doesn't give proper space to anything, and in my opinion can't keep the viewer's attention properly. On the other hand, Suda Masaki is great in this film and perfectly conveys to the viewer what Haru feels, wants, is. For her part, Tsuchiya Tao was awkward and sharp-edged enough to do a decent portrayal of Shizuka. Suda lifts it up, the rest is rather average to below average. The anime is much better because it gives more space to building relationships and revealing more of the characters.

Peuriseuteu (2018) (Serie)

Englisch I can't say it was badly done, exactly. Quite the contrary. If you like the traditional methods of an exorcism, go for it – crosses, holy water, reciting and asking for a name, possessed growls with gnashing teeth. We've got two appealing priests who are helped by others, and the whole team is trying to make the world a better place. Unfortunately, we also have a heroine who struck me as so unappealing during the first few episodes that I couldn't forgive her until the end, and because of that, I didn't care how she turned out. I didn't care who she ended up with. I didn't care if she lived. I didn't care about her at all. And then that affected other things, because that character's condition also affected other characters, and quite significantly. What can you do. I didn't really enjoy the series because of that. So what positive things can I say about it? Characters "die", characters suffer, everyone is possessed, evil doesn't take sides. I guess. Otherwise, it's kind of a classic exorcist story that's not terribly scary unless you really get into it and get swept up in the music. The twelfth episode had a great ending. Finally, something that makes it worth watching. Purely subjectively, it gets 2 stars; if I'm being a bit objective, it'll be 3 stars because it doesn't bring anything to the table besides combining the exorcism with the medical setting.

Anonymous Noise (2017)

Englisch Well shot, well voiced, actors carefully chosen, in my opinion. Shison Jun did a good job looking gentle and sweet (compared to his role as the freak in Todome no Kiss) and Koseki Yūta was unrecognizable from the beginning, suddenly he was a really handsome guy. Unfortunately, the film feels a bit hollow, and it's hard to tell whether or not it’s because of the source material. But why watch it? It’s only worth it for the scene where those two have a guitar duel. And maybe you're also in the mood for something unpretentious, where no one's tapping their feet and everyone's sort of friends, understanding of everything, and nothing much happens. An average high school romance that punches above its weight in music.

Nidžiiro Days (2018)

Englisch A thoroughbred movie about "youth". There's no major conflict in the film, but that doesn't detract from it at all. On the contrary, I think it's rather fun to watch a bunch of high school kids just enjoying life, wanting to date, thinking about the future, and cultivating a nice friendship. Another bonus is the direction. You can really see that this is not the hands of a guy who churns out one live action film after another, but he's pretty careful about what he creates. Not to mention that he has done a great job directing the youngsters, who were well chosen for their roles. I really can't complain about their acting. Yes, it's true that they were all still holding back a bit, but it didn't hurt this film. Maybe the opposite, since it was as immature as the characters they were portraying. An enjoyable high school movie full of friendship and a kind word.

Shadowhunters (2016) (Serie)

Englisch Refined dialogue, a likeable main character whose performance certainly goes far, since she plays it really wonderfully. A well thought-out story where everything makes sense and fits together with no plot holes anywhere. Not even a hint of that silly red library. Cuts that are very clever and original. Basically, all of the above is lacking from this series, and at times it's so stupid that even Charmed looks like a work of art next to it. It's great on drugs or alcohol. That I’m sure of.

Memories of the Alhambra (2018) (Serie)

Englisch Interesting subject matter, awfully nice effects, but I couldn't actually get into it until the end. Sure, there were some great moments where I thought it finally had the right drive, but unfortunately it fizzled out again rather quickly. My second disappointment was that nobody actually has any idea why Se Joo fell in love with Jin Woo. Does she like money, self-harm, and wounded animals? On the other hand, it was clear why Jin Woo took a liking to Se Joo (he just needed a sucker who would trust him and be boundlessly devoted to him, apparently this is something guys go for and need if they have a big quest ahead of them). At least that was good. In terms of the screenwriting, it wasn't great; you could tell it was pretty similar to W, except someone kept the screenwriter on a tight leash so it wouldn't be as much of a mess as the previous work. I would even dare to say that it was the director who gave it the form it needed. As for the actors, if you like them, you'll get what you're already used to. Not a hair more. The ending is predictable (because how else were they supposed to get out of it, right? They had no capacity left for anything else). And was a big disappointment for many. On the plus side, you simply want to know what's going to happen next, how it's going to turn out, and why it's actually happening the way it is (even though nothing else about it interested me). You won't get a satisfactory answer to that last one, it has its bugs. But why not. It's like light fare without a distinct genre. Certainly not a series about love. A mediocre 3 stars.

Deine Juliet (2018)

Englisch What contributed to my personal enjoyment was that it was a bit of an homage to Jane Austen (or maybe I just made that up there without it being the intention, but that’s okay, too). Jane, Elizabeth, Dawsey, which sounds like Darcy, Austen's work was in the bookstore when the reading group was stealing books, etc. I felt a bit like the film was suggesting that Victorian romance was gone, only to buckle and discard that statement in the end and make it as sweet as can be – nicely in the rhythm of a strong romantic heroine. The film doesn't really have any proper conflict, and it does show some hard moments, but it comes to the viewer in a gentle sort of way, in waves that crash against the boulders of cliché before they reach anyone's heart, so that the heart eventually blocks them out and they drown in the sea. Everyone likes each other, everyone is understanding, gallant, and charming. Plus, the story takes place above all in a beautiful setting, so the viewer doesn't even have to mind so much that they're watching a fairy tale when perhaps they wanted a dramatic historical romance. That’s something you’ll definitely never get out of this. And the moral? Germans are human, too. A mediocre 3 stars.

Peach Girl (2017)

Englisch Boring, truncated, nothing new in the genre, and unfortunately it's not presented in any interesting or entertaining way, so for me a film that didn't engage me, even though the heroine manages to date two guys here (which I think is cool), it has no juice and even the attractive Mackenyu can't save it. It was all over the place, it's no wonder you can't connect with the characters and root for them because they have no depth. it doesn't really matter who the heroine ends up with and how their dreams came true, because they're just flat characters who will burn like paper and be forgotten.

Survival wedding (2018) (Serie)

Englisch A mediocre romance about how an almost 30-year-old gets dumped moments before her wedding, but then at least gets a job offer when she starts working under a rather extravagant boss. He gives her the condition that she has to get married within six months or she'll be fired. And she has to write articles about the whole six-month process. Pretty much a normal situation comedy. First she tries to get back together with her ex, but then a slightly younger handsome cutie comes on the scene, so why not him? The good thing is that it's not entirely clear until almost the end who the heroine will end up with. She doesn't have great chemistry with the sweet guy, but she and the boss have great chemistry and good dialogue flies between them. So they're all at least a little hokey – but for a few exceptions – and serially stereotypical, but why not. A romantic comedy with growth for the main character. A rather dull affair for me, but fine for the genre. A weaker 3 stars.
