Ozark - Season 2 (2018) (Staffel)

Englisch A solid continuation of the (im)morality of a slick financier and his polished family. It has the same half-life as Breaking Bad, but without the humor. The series' creators stick close to the serious narrative, and even the stumbling blocks that Marty has to deal with bring very few smiles to your face. Nor is building a casino with heroin producers as partners much fun when the FBI is sniffing around. There is no return from the Ozarks, and I hope the makers are already thinking about how to cap it all off. Otherwise, the build-up would start to turn into banality and that would be a shame.

The Gentlemen (2019)

Englisch The Gentlemen is an outstanding, well-thought-out British gangster movie that Richie designed with a little more sophistication than we are used to seeing from him. The narration by the sleazy homosexual journalist played by Hugh Grant, exaggerated just enough to make it sound more cinematic, highlights the business sense of the protagonists and the importance of having reliable helpers. The acting performances are delightful (McConaughey really needed a role like this) and Colin Farrell gives a crowning performance in the role of the honorable trainer who doesn’t like getting mixed up in “gangster shit", but likes to pay his debts. A wealth of one-lines and a good, honest two hours of British entertainment. I just happen to have a bit of Japanese beef in the freezer.

Birds Of Prey: The Emancipation Of Harley Quinn (2020)

Englisch Chaotically told banality about a girl who needed to take a shit. Although the role of Harley fits Margot like a glove, the solo stories about her do not work in the comic book, let alone in a film. The affected wisecracks and vain attempts to generate humor just aren’t funny. On top of that, the whole film is wrapped up in some sort of weird girl-power package, which is getting more and more annoying in films these days. Luckily, the action scenes are very well filmed and are original, so there is still something worth watching. In this film, McGregor looks a little like Bono and his “I want it and it’s mine" approach is a fairly refreshing interpretation of a villain. You totally forget the other would-be heroines even before you begin writing your review on FilmBooster. Crime pays.

James Cameron's Story of Science Fiction (2018) (Serie)

Englisch Cameron and other top filmmakers talk about sci-fi. Some guests just sit there nodding, while others reveal amusing moments from behind the scenes or present interesting points of view. The excerpts from interviews with Asimov and the rare film clips are excellent. But it seems like Jim is getting paid for a good chat about what we talk about every day at the pub. And that’s another reason to tip your hat to him.

A Toy Story: Alles hört auf kein Kommando (2019)

Englisch A powerful story with a lesson for life that also has something for adults, who now and again find themselves with their eyes brimming with tears of nostalgia. The film offers kids a lesson and also some fun plush toys (bunny and ducky) with the humble ambition to kill someone. For girls it presents a strong, emancipated heroine and a little girl who prefers the woman sheriff to Woody. The men can just go away or spend the rest of their existence in the closet. My daughter will love this film in a couple of years. Pixar at its best.

Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)

Englisch DeVito’s Rock is excellent, better than the last one. Jack Black enjoys his role as a loudmouthed, racist black guy and the rest of them are just OK. The action scenes are inventive, especially the on in the desert and the climax with the airship. The end returns to the original plot from the first film, sowing the seeds for another sequel, but I’m not sure if they’ll be able to convince the main stars to do it.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)

Englisch Entertaining, uncomplicated baloney based on a cartoon my sister and I used to watch on TV when we were kids. Sonic is great, the Donut Lord is also fine (even though it is obvious that Marsden had a problem speaking with nobody), but Carrey’s Robotnik is really classy. Jim’s escapades improve the movie slightly in my eyes. Sonic’s dance in the (EVIL) cabin, his yelling and contempt for people and basically everything apart from his drones (and now with COVID-19, Amazon will deliver even faster than we dreamed) are scenes worth watching more than once. "Do you think I’m an idiot? Of course I’ll have your latte. You make a great latte!"

Spectral (2016)

Englisch A pure-blooded military sci-fi flick shot in Hungary and Slovakia for a few beads. The visual aspect is first-class. The Bose-Einstein condensate is an explanation just within the bounds of credibility, which I am willing to accept in films likes this. Badge Dale is solid up to the point when he begins building a plasma gun out of junk, then his credibility just flies out of the window. The action scenes, especially the climax and the extraction scene in the square, are truly well done (and the Tatra 603s were good to see). A pleasant surprise.

Lilo & Stitch (2002)

Englisch A fantastic Disney movie that grafts violence, aliens and weapons onto a story about family values. Non-stop one-liners. We get Hawaiian surfing and hula hula dancers, but it’s more about being and outsider and weird. Entertaining for kids and adults alike. And it was clearly made by Elvis fans.

Superman: Red Son (2020)

Englisch I was annoyed by the divergence from Millar’s comic book in key aspects of the story and the distortion of the ideological ideas presented and basically of the main point. But as an animated film, Red Son is a very clever twist on the Superman myth, with great action and a really dark atmosphere. The best part is his scuffle with Batmankov.
