Inside Wikileaks - Die fünfte Gewalt (2013)

Englisch A movie about WikiLeaks? Which one? Oh, that one. That one that is based on two of the worst books...twisted and full of lies, like all bad propaganda. Look, film about Wiki Leaks... It’s more like an "anti-Wiki Leaks" movie. The problem is not what it’s based on, but how crummily it‘s made. The important stuff has no significance (for the plot), but even the minor human dramas are inadequate. Singer’s awful screenplay is episodic, cursory and squashes lots of things together. He often fabricates to enhance the dramatic effect, something that Condon sometimes is able and sometimes is unable (shabby virtual offices) to sell. It turns out to be a story about a weirdo and a traitor who never wanted to find each other nor had anything in common, but just wanted to change the world. Cumberbatch acts really well and gives it all he’s got, but Brühl is annoying to the point of unpleasantness – was that the intention? And that final conversation about the fifth status or whatever seems ridiculous in today’s world. The majority of people aren’t interested, they don’t read. Believe me, I wrote a diploma theses about this. Seriously, how many cablegrams, dispatches or messages have you read?

Gangster Chronicles (2013)

Englisch The three stories linked via uninspiring junk from a pawn shop are all formidable. Personally, I like the second one about the lost wife. I liked how it turned out. And Matt Dillon just has the best wino voice ever. The junkie mayhem also has something to it and Paul Walker dominates it. Elvis is just a God-squad advertising stunt. Has some style, but maybe even pointless without the final link-up.

The LEGO Movie (2014)

Englisch Everybody I asked if they’d like to go to the theater with me looked at me as if I were crazy, their loss... Bags of fun, full of ideas, great lines and incredible digs, where Gandalf and Dumbledore chat together and the Batmobile is parked on a Lego cloud at the end of a rainbow road. Such an awful mishmash, you just can’t help liking it. That’s what the story is about - a manual against fantasy, creativity struggles against business (Lord Business) using all possible and impossible ideas. The creative Lord/Miller duo mainly wants to put across an important message to children and adults alike: LEGO IS THE BEST! ;-) "We are from the planet Duplo, and we're here to destroy you!"

Robocop (2014)

Englisch The big surprise is the powerful screenplay which squeezes all it can from the topic and the story even has some overlap of relevance. It takes a slightly different route to the original RoboCop and that certainly does no harm. Routine action is a little restrained, only letting go during the final battle with the chickens. Keaton and Oldman steal the movie, dominating the screen in their scenes together. Alex Murphy has also gone through a certain change. Although Kinnaman doesn’t equal Weller’s qualities, he puts on a really good performance. The ace up the sleeve is director José Padilha who, despite an exhausting struggle with the studio, was able to push a lot of ideas into the project (the studio rejected nine out of every ten ideas) and details that push RoboCop upward. Next time, give it freer rein and it’ll be bombastic.

Her (2013)

Englisch I like my Windows, but Samantha wins hands down. Quite an original idea loses points for its protractedness (they could have cut something), but otherwise it pleases with its romantic and scientific spirit. Phoenix’s acting is just great, Scarlett Johansson has an captivating voice (you start to notice that once you stop gawping at her perfect body). I liked the layered message (on two levels) which forces the viewer even after the movie is over to think (about your OS).

Marvel One-Shot: All Hail the King (2014)

Englisch Marvel has outdone itself again, with Ben Kingsley, who gave his played his most iconic role since Gandhi, bringing us the most entertaining ever bonus short. Anybody who knows at least a little about the comic book mythology of Iron Man will be thrilled. The ending then opens the door into the distant future where this metal guy tries his strength against a pissed magician.

Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics (2010)

Englisch A perfect introduction to the comic book world for all those interested. The historical context, reasons why, how and where, including the most important comic book works. The only but relatively logical problem arises because this is a great celebration of everything produced by DC, but all of the rest is missing – I mean European comic books and Marvel.

Hard Boiled 1 (1992)

Englisch Neat action and cool lines. Both John Woo and Chow Yun-Fat are on their best form here. Technically almost perfect action scenes, ingenious and still surprises after all these years. I’m telling you, this movie suited me down to the ground. Tequila’s apt remarks were really to my taste. A classic that I plan on watching again soon.

Die Jagd (2012)

Englisch A realistic and chilling drama that says a lot about human nature. Mads is superb as always. The film never slips into cinematic clichés and despite this, or perhaps because of it, it remains suspenseful.

12 Years a Slave (2013)

Englisch I sort of see parallels with today’s society in this and not an anti-racist fairytale with a happy ending, which they obviously seemed to want. McQueen has disappointed me for the first time, probably because he couldn’t be sufficiently detached from the topic and he forgot to spice it up with something. These torturous 12 years seem fairly relaxed and Platt doesn’t experience proper slavery until he’s with Fassbender, who is cutely eccentric and interprets the Word of the Lord in his own special way. And eventually he alone really deals out punishment. Chiwetel Ejiofor (how the heck do you pronounce that?) acts well, but he honestly doesn’t have that much to do and the nomination for an Oscar is a little bizarre. The concept of time passing was poorly intimated, it’s hard to tell how long he was where and if it wasn’t for the title and the granddaughter, it could have easily been like four years. Lifelessly filmed and if it weren’t for Fassbender, I just don’t know. Nothing exceptional, but it’s watchable. P.S.: Hans Zimmer sometimes shines, but the music is mostly pretty ordinary and the gospel overkill is just awful. I said dance! Come on! Get goin’, Platt!
