Biografie
James Remar is an actor who unreservedly transforms himself into whatever character he is called upon to play. A powerful screen presence has always been the hallmark of Remar's versatile and long career.
Whether playing streetwise gang kid Ajax in Walter Hill’s 1979 film “The Warriors,” or billionaire playboy Richard Wright in the hit HBO series “Sex and the City,” Remar’s impact is so complete that his characters become memorable icons in American movie and television history.
His early training with Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse, and later with Stella Adler, instilled in him a tremendous dedication to authenticity. This dedication led to playing parts so truthfully that characters like Ganz in director Hill’s “48 Hours,” literally jumped off the screen. His versatility is wholly evident in the extreme range of roles he is able to play, from a gay Nazi hustler opposite Richard Gere in “Bent” on Broadway, and the hard, yet sympathetic, narcotics detective opposite Matt Dillon in Gus Van Sant's independent classic “Drugstore Cowboy” to the tough customs agent in Jon Singleton’s smash hit “2Fast 2Furious.” Along with creating dozens of fictional characters, he has played such formidable historical figures as General Omar Bradley opposite Tom Selleck in “Ike: Countdown to D-Day” and Dutch Schultz in Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Cotton Club.”
Remar was seen in producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura’s sleeper hit “Red,” starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren and Mary-Louse Parker. Directed by Robert Schwentke, Remar portrays Gabriel Singer, a cargo pilot who discovers all of his long-time associates are suddenly turning up dead.
In 2009 he appeared in the mystery thriller, “The Unborn,” produced by Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes and directed by David S. Goyer, and in 2008 was seen in the Judd Apatow production, “Pineapple Express,” directed by David Gordon Green and starring Seth Rogen and James Franco.
He has appeared in over 50 feature films, numerous television projects (both episodic and long form) and on the New York stage. Remar has also lent his voice to several animated television series and video games.
His work has been honored with an Academy Award as the star of the 1998 Best Live Action short subject “Session Man” and a 2001 SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series for “Sex and the City.”
