He entered French films as an assistant director, later directing a number of shorts. As a screenwriter he collaborated with Louis Malle and shared an Oscar nomination with Philippe de Broca’s That Man From Rio (1964). He made an auspicious debut as a director with La Vie De Château, but he was not universally admired until 1990, when he turned out a sumptuous, definitive screen adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac, starring Gérard Depardieu.
