Oscar 2021 - Die Academy Awards - Live aus L.A.

I don't mind predictability, I don't mind political influences much even when they are inappropriate, and I don't even mind that Carey Mulligan didn't win. What bothers me is the terrible pointlessness and lack of excitement in a broadcast all the fun has disappeared from. It's not because of the modest setting or the reduced number of participants, but rather the creative cuts in those long-established traditions that bring all the substance to the event. During this celebration of film, we don't see a proper clip of the nominees, which feels like a joke when it comes to sound, costumes, special effects, or music. Nominated songs are played outside of the main broadcast. No one came up with a funny skit, even an embarrassingly bad one, which means that humor has been completely abandoned. And yet the whole ceremony lasts indefinitely because the allotted time is dedicated to unedited acknowledgements. Hopefully, under normal circumstances, everything will go back where it belongs, otherwise the Academy may as well go back to their distant past of simply announcing the results. (27.04.2021)

In my opinion, this was one of the most digestible award ceremonies in years. Maybe the more intimate concept and the change of environment also contributed a bit. Probably the funniest performance was by Glenn Close. I really rooted for the Oscar for the feature-length documentary My Octopus Teacher and I'm thrilled that it actually won the golden statue amidst such tough competition. Overall, I feel that the awards were distributed quite fairly, except perhaps in the Song category, where I would have preferred Celeste with "Hear My Voice". (26.04.2021)
