The time portrayed by this adventure-film for older children is the era following the death of King Matthias. The wealthy feudal lords make the common peasants sweat cruelly. Bishop Ambrus has it drummed out to the people that anybody failing to pay the many different kinds of taxes will have his ears cut off. The young lad, Jankó, stands up against the bishop who wants to buy himself the cardinalship at the expense of the daily bread of his peasants. In the company of the melancholic Darázs Orbán with his rusted sword and the daughter of the head shepherd of King Matthias, Anyica, he makes life difficult for the bishop in a series of comic-dangerous adventures. People call him the star-eyed shepherd. He frees the imprisoned poor and breaks into the sleeping chamber of the bishop, threatening to cut his holy ears off. Bishop Ambrus must issue in writing that he frees his peasants from serfdom and their many taxes. (Verleiher-Text)
